Formula
Each time is converted to seconds (days × 86,400 + hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds). The two values are added or subtracted and the result is converted back to days, hours, minutes and seconds.
Example: 2 hours 30 minutes + 1 hour 45 minutes = 4 hours 15 minutes. And 1 day 2 hours 30 minutes + 5 hours 45 minutes 10 seconds = 1 day 8 hours 15 minutes 10 seconds.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I enter more than 60 minutes or 24 hours?
Extra minutes roll into hours and extra hours roll into days, so 90 minutes is shown as 1 hour 30 minutes.
What if the result is negative?
When you subtract a longer time from a shorter one, the result is shown with a minus sign.
Can I enter decimals?
Yes. Fractions are converted to seconds and the total is rounded to the nearest second, so 1.5 hours becomes 1 hour 30 minutes.
