Hours Calculator
Enter a start time, an end time and an unpaid break to see the hours worked, in hours and minutes and as decimal hours. Overnight shifts work too.
Formula
Hours worked = end time − start time − unpaid break. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the shift is treated as running past midnight.
Example: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with a 30-minute break is 8 hours. A night shift from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM with no break is also 8 hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. For example, 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.
Does the calculator handle overnight shifts?
Yes. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift ends the next day.
Are breaks paid?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, short rest breaks of about 5 to 20 minutes are generally paid and count as hours worked, while meal periods of 30 minutes or more are typically unpaid when the employee is fully relieved of duty. State rules and employer policies can differ, so check yours.
